David Surowiec - A.K.A. Samual F. Chapman
Audra Surowiec - A.K.A. Eliza Rebecca Elgin "Miss Beck"
Samuel F. Chapman and Eliza Rebecca Elgin met while Sam was healing from a wound received during a raid. David picked the "Fighting Parson" because he was a peaceful, God fearing man which made him fearless in his fighting, always one of the first charging into the fight and one of the last men out. He was fiercly loyal to God, the South, Mosby and the men of the 43rd VA Cav.
On the afternoon of 24 July, 1864 the Fighting Parson became Captain of Co. E, after being married to Eliza Rebecca Elgin that morning.
"Miss Beck" had many suitors, but the handsome Lieutenant Chapman was her favorite. He first asked her to marry him after ten days of her tending to his wounds. She thought he was delirious and made light of it. After he left he wrote her a letter telling her his feelings, but apologized and let her know he would not bother her anymore. When she knew it was more than deliriousness, she was very dismayed that she had let him go. Over time letters began again and they courted through pen and ink. Audra picked Eliza Rebecca Elgin mostly because she was married to Samuel Chapman, as Audra is married to David. As we have gotten to know them better, we see many similarities in our own lives as a married couple, with their courtship, their devotion to each other, love of life and their love of children which in total were 8.
