The members of Historic Mosby's Rangers participate in historic reenactments sponsored by the Northwest Civil War Council ( NCWC) and the Washington Civil War Association (WCWA). These reenactments are held on a monthly basis throughout each year at various state and county parks and historic sites in the states of the Pacific Northwest. Reenactments consist of public demonstrations of battlefield tactics and presentations of military and civilian camp life, utilizing small arms, horses, and cavalry equipments of the mid nineteenth century. The primary purpose of Historic Mosby's Rangers participating is to preserve and perpetuate the memory of the men who served with the 43rd Battalion Virginia Cavalry, 1863-1865. The organization schedules a weekend drill each month from October to May. The purpose of these drills is to learn and perfect the skills necessary to accurately portray a mounted arm of the partisan service of the Confederate States of America. During these drills the members of Historic Mosby's Rangers research and practice equitation, cavalry tactics, and the safe use of period weapons, as well as nineteenth-century dress and social customs as existed in the ante-bellum South. These drill sessions are currently held in the rural Olympia area and are regularly participated in by all active members of the organization. Several times during the school year Historic Mosby's Rangers are invited to provide presentations of original and reproduction Civil War artifacts at public schools in the greater Puget Sound area. The purpose of these programs is to compliment the study of the American Civil War. A typical program exposes students to a Civil War camp setting where they can examine artifacts of the war, and experience first person interpretations of the social and political background that led to the war between the states. Historic Mosby's Rangers participate in dramatic presentations and reenactments of an historic nature sponsored by various historic groups outside of the NCWC\ WCWA organizational umbrella. These recreations take on a variety of forms specific to the sponsor involved, but are generally confined to the arena of nineteenth century Washington state history. Historic Mosby's Rangers supports other non-NCWC/WCWA groups on the average of three times per year. |
