Welcome to the Web Site for The Historic Mosby's Rangers. We are a Civil War Reenacting Battalion in the Washington Civil War Association. Our group strives to honor the memory of the brave men who fought in the defense of their homes and for the independence of their country by serving with Mosby's Rangers.
In December of 1862 a young scout on General Stuart's staff left his service to form an independent partisan unit. This wily scout, John Singleton Mosby, would operate almost entirely behind enemy lines in northern Virginia. In the spring of 1863 near Rectors Crossroads a group of 60 men gathered to muster into Company A of the 43rd Battalion Virginia Cavalry. Dashing, yet furious warriors they became more famously known as Mosby's Rangers.
For the remainder of the war this unit of brave men proceeded to disrupt, demoralize, and harass the rear of the Union army. So effective were their efforts that the Union command devoted large numbers of men and materiel to try to capture or defeat them.
Usually working in small groups they had the ability to appear seemingly from no where then disappear just as suddenly. The mere mention of Mosby's name would strike fear in the minds of Union troops. |
